I recently read in the
Huntington post about technology has advanced in a lot of good ways. The main
purpose of technology is to make our lives easier and for it to be continuing
to advance. There was an event called the Women's Forum in France which covered the influence of new technologies on our daily life in multiple sessions. One thing that I got from this article was that through technology and social media, people can be contacted in an instinct and at any time of the day. ""Social media removes all distances: geographic social, hierarchical. You can reach anyone, at any time, and communicate in real time. Thus, a permanent link of communication has been created," said Julien Maldonate, a senior manager at Deloitte" (Beliak, J).
In another session, they discussed a drawback. I analyzed how new technologies cause stress and suffering, because of the concept referred to as "Infobesity." Infobesity meaning the relentless feast of online information, typically through search engines. On of the founders and CEO's of The Social Bureau argues that the more technology is becoming more advances the more obsessed we become of wanting to control it. "People are trying to live 10 lives at once and a lot of stress and anxiety occurs from that. The two speakers even argue that we are suffering from digital bulimia, meaning that we take in a lot of information at once, without really processing it for ourselves, and in turn create a lot of new information" (Beliak, J). Said best by Christophe Aguiton, "We are at the same time creators and victims of information overload."There are a few more benefits with technology steadily increasing. Saving money and time are two. A couple times, when I;m around, I notice my dad going on conference calls with managers and his other co-workers as well. This is one of the ways technology as been very efficient. Trying to gather everyone into the same place and time for meetings requires the time to plan ahead. "Technology limits the need for people to be in the same physical location, for example when companies hold a teleconference with several employees located in different branches or when they allow employees to telecommute from home. In some cases, this can save companies money because they do not have to pay travel expenses" (Joseph, C). Also technology can use less time to do several tasks over a period of time. "Instead of sending a message by postal mail, using email or fax can deliver it instantaneously. Technology can also speed up various manufacturing processes, as machines and computers can do work that was once performed by humans more quickly and efficiently" (Joseph, C). Technology an have positive and negative impacts on the world, its the way we use it and how it affects us are ways that can bring change.

When I read this my initial thought was "OMG, this is me." I did not know there was a term for people like this but I am most definitely someone who has infobesity. I found it really interesting because people often associate the word obesity with a lot of negative feelings and traits but your last paragraph really makes it seem like infobesity provides us with many benefits we did not have before. I'm glad you took a positive spin because there are a lot of articles that jab at people like me claiming that I am out of touch with society and lack social skills but at the same time technology has provided me more communication means even allowing me to be in more than one place at a time.
ReplyDeleteHey Katana,
ReplyDeleteI second Jen's comment. I truly thought that everything you mentioned about technology obsession had something to do with me. I have a few things that I really liked about your blog post. Firstly, I thought that the quote given by Julien Maldonate was a perfect way to describe what technology and social media has done to communication today, by creating "a permanent link of communication". Lastly, I like how you mentioned some downsides of our technology today, and how a lot of people may not process information entirely yet in turn they end up creating a lot of new information.
I enjoyed reading this and can't wait to read more from you.
Hi Katana, This is a good analysis of the pros of technology. Globalization is now a fact of life. I too believe “infobesity” can be an issue that comes with the rise of technology due to the reliability of the information available to people. Today, anyone can post anything online and this information can be seen by anyone around the world. IT created telework or telecommunicating and it has been so beneficial for both employees and employers, some are mentioned in your analysis. I also liked how you used a real life example to back up your thoughts. I look forward to reading your next post.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think technology has its positives and negatives but I don't always feel that communication is always positive. It definitely is helpful when communicating through work with coworkers in other states or even other countries and even the same for family and friends but nothing beats the social interaction with people in person. I can say I'm not the best at keeping up with group work or collaboration projects online but it does help when there is no time to meet. But at the same time, I agree, technology definitely has a lot of benefits.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how much people socialize online these days, I personally can't keep up like that as I rather just hang with people I know then chat with 100+ random strangers. I will browse the various sites and see what is going on. Its an interesting topic of choice (with a little irony thanks to blogspot), the connectedness of the internet has changed a lot of what people can do, for example you can live your whole life almost never leaving the house. Rather scary proposition when you think about it and the scale that it could achieve.
